Institute Presentation
Charité is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. Clinical care, research and teaching is delivered by physicians and researchers of the highest international standard. Charité provided more than half of all German Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine, including Emil von Behring, Robert Koch, and Paul Ehrlich, and is internationally renowned for its excellence in teaching and training. Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin represents a single medical faculty, which serves both the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin. It extends over four campuses, and has close to 100 different departments and institutes, which make up a total of 17 different Charité centres. Having marked its 300-year anniversary in 2010, the Charité is now one of the largest employers in Berlin, employing 14,576 staff (or 18,010 if including its subsidiaries), and with a total annual turnover of €1.8 billion.
At Charité, approximately 3,700 researchers are actively engaged in the development of pioneering innovations in the field of medicine. They work across 1,000 projects, working groups and collaborative projects with particular focus on the interface between basic and patient-oriented research, which seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with both national and international partners.
The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, headed by Prof. Frank Tacke, is a highly experienced clinical centre covering the entire spectrum of liver diseases and offering all established therapeutic interventions. In cooperation with the surgical department, 50-100 liver transplantations are performed each year. The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology is involved in several clinical trials for end-stage liver diseases including the GRAFT study which tested G-CSF in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (NCT02669680) and hosts several research groups exploring the pathophysiological mechanisms in liver diseases providing a wide spectrum of sophisticated experimental approaches.
In A-TANGO, Charité will be involved as a recruitment centre and in the biomarker analysis of WP4. Most importantly, it provides the project’s principal investigator (Dr. Cornelius Engelmann) of the clinical trials (WP3).
